There are endless possibilities for using technology to our advantage, especially within the domain media has allowed us to build around ourselves. And depending on your business, there’s a good chance that you, the modern entrepreneur, might find that you’re able to do a great deal of work either from home or on the go. Because of Skype, email, and a myriad of other online networking and collaboration channels, anybody who wants to control their business outside the office can do precisely that, at least in some capacity. While the benefits of doing business face to face will never fully die out, utilizing available technologies for keeping up productivity while working from home might make you just as efficient — or even more efficient — from the comfort of your own abode.
Perhaps the most important factors in working off-site will be how you cultivate productivity while you’re away from the regulations of the office, and how much time you invest in efficiently organizing your personal work area. Some telecommuters find that still taking the time to get dressed as they would for work helps them get in the appropriate head space. The unfortunate downside to anything that’s endless is, well, that it’s endless: It’s all too easy to get sidetracked by endless entertainment and resources, which is why it can be so helpful to mentally prepare for the day by going through your normal work-related routine before you clock in from home.
Make sure you’ve set up a comfortable work area in your home that helps the creative juices flow. If the hustle and bustle of a family environment proves to be too much, give yourself some time to drive to a local coffee shop or a nice park to get some work done. While you may feel like you’re completely on your own, make sure to set up lines of communication to share work, like Google Docs, to stay in sync with your coworkers or boss. Lastly, stay out of the kitchen. It’s going to be easy to snack away all day while you procrastinate. You don’t want the work and pounds to pile up under the influence of these newfound freedoms.
Home is where the heart is. Hopefully, it’s also where some work can get done too.
