If you’ve been hopping on Zoom conferences and LinkedIn message boards since the pandemic started, remote networking might not feel like much fun anymore. Or maybe networking has not been a priority for a while now, and it feels like it might be too late to get started.

But it’s never too late. Anytime is a good time to create new professional relationships which can often last our whole lives. So, how do you make networking fun again, whether you’re remote or in person? Here are a few quick tips for you.

First, meet people through other people. Have a plan and ask for introductions. It’s flattering when our friends tell us, “Hey, my friend is looking for someone who’s an expert in (blank), so I gave them your name.” You’re more likely to talk to someone if another person you know well recommended you to them.

Second, don’t be shy to give people a reason to talk to you, such as sharing experiences with certain problems you might be facing. You don’t want to be stuck in a directionless conversation; plus, it’ll take more time. Professionals appreciate when you’re able to keep a conversation pleasant and brief. That’s why it’s best to be honest about what you’re looking to learn — they might even give you more names to follow up with.

Third, find reasons to follow-up — even in-person! Now might be the perfect time to meet a few of your online connections face to face. Not only will it strengthen your relationship, but it’ll also be a fun reason to go out!
