Verne Harnish, Founder of the world-renowned Entrepreneur’s Organization (EO), understands what it takes to be a successful Entrepreneur…AND…what stops most Entrepreneurs from greater success.

When Joe interviewed him (watch the video here), Verne said one of the biggest constraints entrepreneurs face is ATTRACTING TALENT. Hiring and attracting the RIGHT people is a huge part of the Entrepreneurial puzzle. “The Entrepreneur knows they are the best at doing everything, and it’s impossible for many of them to let go,” says Verne.

What’s worse is when an Entrepreneur tries to get somebody else to do something for them, but they choose the WRONG person. If the person they’ve chosen messes up the job, it burns the Entrepreneur and causes them to get stuck doing everything.

Here’s how you can start to deal with this: Think about all the functions which have to exist in your business: Sales, Marketing, Operations, Accounting, and so on. When you’re in the start-up phase, YOU are all these functions. Over time, in order to scale, you have to get the right people in the right functions. “All growing a company is, figuring out which function you can delegate next,” Verne says.

People are rarely taught how to delegate, but there’s an art and science to doing it correctly. Simply handing something off to others is abdication. Delegation, on the other hand, requires both feedback and closing loops on the activities you’ve got people working on.

Working on tiring things is another area that trips up Entrepreneurs. While being amazingly talented at many things often gets Entrepreneurs into business, it gets Entrepreneurs in TROUBLE and becomes a WEAKNESS after a certain point.

Anything that tires you out in business is a signal to find someone who loves the things that make you tired. For example: Putting together presentation material tires Verne out. So, he found a creative individual he can send notes to about the presentations he’s looking to put together, and within hours the individual thoughtfully sends back the presentation material Verne needs.

That said, what should YOU do?

Make a list of the functions in your business and make a list of what wears you out. Then, start getting the right people into the right functions AND find somebody else to do those the things that wear you out. As Verne says, “Continue to keep removing constraints that are draining the life and energy out of you. Make sure you spend your time on the stuff that gives you energy. When you choose the right people to delegate to, your life and business are golden.”
