Learning to scale is a crucial to success in business, but it can be a challenging journey.

One thing people miss is that growth should bring you joy, not weigh you down. As an entrepreneur, before thinking you must scale, ask yourself: “What does scaling mean to me? Does this thing I’m doing even need to scale?”

Once you have that straight, the secret to scaling sustainably is keeping your capabilities equal to your opportunities. In other words, keeping your skills sharp for when the big chances do come knocking.

When it comes to capabilities, knowing your basic numbers and being good at math is helpful. But even more helpful is working on your social skills of finding and leveraging the right people — because relationships are the heart of any successful business.

As you do that, look for the ELF™ people who are Easy, Lucrative, and Fun and avoid the HALF — the Hard, Annoying, Lame, and Frustrating. If you have trouble, remember that finding ELF people starts with being an ELF person yourself.

To attract people, you need to understand their emotional atmosphere and have a good vision you can offer them — one that will help as many people as possible and that gets others excited. Building a company and building relationships takes courage, and courage requires confidence — even when we don’t have a lot of it. Confidence feels good, but courage doesn’t. So if what you’re doing feels hard, that’s okay — it means you’re on the right path!

Remember: business is not just what you can do. It’s also about how you make people feel. In other words, it’s how you approach the journey — and how often you ask yourself, “What’s in it for them?”
