What is a gig worker?
What is a gig worker you might ask, it is someone who is self-employed and often works as a freelancer for companies. Gig workers mainly do small jobs for a variety of clients and once one project is complete, they move to the next. In fact, as of 2021 there are approximately 67.7 million freelance workers, and it is predicted to rise at a rate of 2.9 million for the next several years (Law, 2021).

Types of gig workers
There are five main types of gig workers: freelance, consultant, independent contractors, temps, and seasonal workers. Freelancers perform services for a variety of clients, consultants provide guidance, and independent contractors are similar to a standard employee, but they mainly work for themselves. Lastly, temps and seasonal workers are employed for a certain amount of time.

A fair share of gig workers are currently using DoorDash and Uber as a way to bring in cash.
