When you want to start a new chapter in your life with a new business, you just might want to include your romantic partner. They’re an integral, trustworthy part of your life — so why not have them around for business matters and decision-making, too?
Many successful romantic relationships are also business partnerships. However, it does take a certain amount of balance to create a relationship that will endure the test of time and financial tribulations.
First, remember to keep your powers as separate but equal as possible. It’s important to have domain in your business, but you don’t want to take away power from your partner if they’re your co-business founder. If your partner is playing a smaller role, then clearly define their role together and determine whether it will negatively impact your dynamic.
Second, togetherness all the time doesn’t work for everyone. We recommend you to make sure to create space for yourself and your hobbies whenever possible. You don’t want to feel as if you’re constantly obligated to be around the other person. If things start to feel claustrophobic, then direct your headspace to unique interests and curiosities so you still have some “you” time.
Third, most importantly, decide whether or not you and your partner would professionally complement and motivate each other. Julia and Kevin Hartz, founders of Eventbrite.com, revealed that they each work in completely different areas of the company. (Kevin is an engineer, and Julia is a multimedia marketer.) They both have a strong work ethic but rarely overlap in duties, allowing freedom for both.
