When it comes to anything you are going to do, personal or professional, if you know what to do, you can solve the problem.

As Anthony Greenback says in The Book of Survival, “To live through an impossible situation, you don’t need to have the reflexes of a Grand Prix driver, the muscles of a Hercules, the mind of an Einstein. You simply need to know what to do.”

To make this work, you do, of course, need to know what you are trying to do.

This means getting clear on:

  • Who do you want to be a hero to? Who do you want to help?
  • What do you want to expand and multiply?
  • What do you want to contract and subtract?
  • Which activities help you reach outcomes? Which activities don’t?
  • Which seemingly meaningless activities are actually meaningful?

For example, sometimes I’ll go look at things in a seemingly random store because it helps my brain disconnect.

This gives my brain space to make connections.

One might say it’s the difference between wasteful, distracting procrastination and USEFUL procrastination…

Ultimately, first, get clear on the outcomes you are really trying to accomplish.

Then, you can more clearly ask: “Is this activity really going to help me get there? Is this person really wanting to help me get there?”

Everything follows from that. What to do follows what you’re trying to do. This may require giving yourself space. When you can’t see the forest from the trees, it might be time to levitate above the forest so you can better see the big picture.
