True happiness comes from producing values; not by consuming other people’s values.
If you read a book or try to model someone, and you try and do exactly what that person does, but it’s really not you, then it’s an act.
A lot of people read books, go to seminars, follow celebrities, and try to replicate them and take on their characteristics. But it’s not really them.
It’s not much different than a parent who tries to take a child who wants to play music, and tries to force them to be a doctor as a career.
You have to find your own path.
When you try to layer an incongruent value system on yourself, it can mess you up.
There comes a point where we have to let go of all this image management and pleasing people.
My friend Dave Kekich has a credo that says the following: “The source of lasting happiness can never come from outside yourself through consuming values – but only from within yourself by creating values. Producing more than you consume is the only justification for existence.”
If you want to be happy, you have to do things that generate happiness.
