If you read the book Tiny Habits by my friend BJ Fogg (Founder and Director of the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab), he describes how all Human Behavior is MAP. In fact, here’s the formula from the book:
B = MAP
Behavior = Motivation, Ability, Prompt. This is called “The Fogg Behavior Model”.
When behavior fails to occur, one of these three things is missing. When these three things converge at the same time, behavior happens. Now, most achievers have plenty of Motivation. In fact, you reading this communication means you have Motivation. The question is: Do you have the Ability? And, are you building in Prompts?
The reason it is so hard for people to put down their phone is because your entire life is connected to it, and the Prompts are built in. You don’t need Motivation for that. What YOU need to do is build in the Motivation, Ability and Prompts into your own Advertising, Business, and Life.
I interviewed an International Consultant years ago named Barry Shamis. He said, “an employee is a behavior rental agreement”. You are renting their behavior. Their behavior is either going to make you money, save you money, or save you time and stress. Everything you say yes to, you’re saying no to something else. If you say yes to watching a movie, you’re saying no to using that time to work on your advertising, or sleeping, or meditating, and so on. Anybody can transform their life if they understand and direct their behavior.
All behavior is, again, Motivation, Ability, and Prompts. So, if you really want to have an edge, understand Human Behavior. Use it not only for yourself, but to direct the people you pay for and to direct your Clients in a way that is GOOD FOR THEM.
