What business are you in? Go ahead and answer that question, and then keep reading…
Okay, did you think of the business you are in? Well, it’s a bit of a trick question, because the real business you are in is: The Arithmetic Business. All of us are. The fact is, if you can put a promotion or campaign out into the world and it brings a return, you can keep doing that because of the arithmetic. You keep going as long as the math makes sense.
There IS psychology making the arithmetic work, of course. For example, if people want what you are selling, the only thing standing in the way of them giving you money for it is fear. If you remove the fear, they will buy.
Most advertising and marketing is so boring no one pays attention to it. So, you want to make your marketing compelling. As my friend Dean Jackson says, “A compelling offer is 10x more powerful than a convincing argument.”
You have to get the word, the offer, the message, the imagery, all aligned with compelling people to stop in their tracks and take action. This is why you can go broke at a 50% response and get rich at a 0.1% response. It depends on the offer and the list. Ultimately, marketing is applied psychology, and the arithmetic that makes it work.
Remember this: The money fairy is not going to show up and just crap money. So, you have to dig into the arithmetic and understand the psychology.
