One of the best ways I’ve found growth and inspiration in my life – even when I was a drug addict – is through reading. Actually, if it wasn’t for reading, my recovery from addiction would have never happened. Reading is what has improved my life in all areas; not just business. I would learn through other people’s words.

I have read over a thousand books. School is never out for the pro. Even after you get out of school, the real education of life starts. We create our own schools and we decide who the teachers are and what the curriculum will be. And life is the greatest teacher.

Almost anyone who is an avid reader can point to a book that has dramatically impacted, or even changed, the trajectory of their life by giving them strategy, perspective or insight.

Reading is critically important. Everyone who is a reader is not necessarily a leader, but I don’t know any leaders that are not readers. Every person I’ve ever met who has accomplished something great in life is a reader. They may not read physically, but it could be they learn through audios or videos. They are constantly learning and educating themselves.

When it comes to books, I think people are better served mastering a couple books rather than simply reading many books. When it comes to determining what you should watch on video, what seminars you should attend, or what you should read, ask yourself this question: “What needs solved?”

In fact, if you find yourself in any situation where you need to unstick yourself or figure out how to get through a difficult situation, if you ask yourself this one question, it can clarify so much for you. The books you read, the things you pay attention to, the people you hang out with – you can center a lot of it around what needs to be solved in your life. Pay attention to that this year.
