I recently got a message from my assistant of 28 years, Eunice, that got me thinking about an important aspect of entrepreneurship: The ability to “pass the baton” to team members who can think critically, execute, and leverage ideas into action. The more I think about it, the more crucial I think it is, so I want to share this with you…

Avoiding Reactive States

If your team needs to constantly seek your approval to move forward, it can put Entrepreneurs into reactive state. You see, I often find myself overwhelmed with a barrage of decisions and tasks being thrown at me. It’s like trying to hit too many tennis balls at once. This “decision fatigue” hinders progress and slows down momentum.

If we want to truly thrive as Entrepreneurs, we need to trust our team members to take the baton and make things happen. I’ve learned that constantly being pulled into phone calls and meetings disrupts my focus and prevents me from effectively delegating responsibilities. It’s essential that teams make decisions and act without constant micromanagement.

The “Hot Potato Syndrome”

Sometimes, when I try to hand off a task or responsibility, it can feel like I’m giving someone a hot potato instead of a baton. It happens when I haven’t adequately prepared them or when they lack the necessary skills or knowledge to handle the task. As Entrepreneurs, we need to ensure that we set our team members up for success by equipping them with the right tools, guidance, and support.

Strategic Thinking and Leveraging Resources

One crucial aspect I’ve noticed is the lack of strategic thinking when it comes to leveraging resources effectively. This isn’t just in my company, but in many companies. We have a wealth of content, podcasts, and videos, but we often fail to connect the dots and create a unified strategy. We need to ask ourselves, “What is the ultimate goal we want to achieve, and how can we leverage our resources to get there?”

By strategically repurposing content, such as turning podcast episodes into social media posts or leveraging your expertise for coaching sessions, you can maximize your impact and reach a broader audience. It’s about thinking beyond individual tasks and finding ways to synchronize your company’s efforts towards a common goal.

Listening to Complaints and Eliminating Frustrations

Listening to complaints, whether from customers, team members, or partners, can be a powerful tool for making things better. Complaining often reveals areas where we can ease frustrations and provide better solutions. Just as Gary Chapman’s concept of “5 Love Languages” applies to personal relationships, it can also be applied to business. Gary told me personally that if you want to know what someone’s love language is, listen to what they complain about. By addressing and resolving complaints, we can build stronger relationships and create a more successful business.

The Recipe for Success

Running a successful business is like following a recipe. It’s a combination of strategic actions done in a particular way to achieve a desired result. Winners find ways to win by fine-tuning their approach, while losers find ways to lose by overlooking crucial elements.

So approach your business with a winning mindset. Identify the key ingredients, the scripts, the messages, and the actions that lead to success. By doing so, you can create a system that consistently produces positive outcomes and drives your business forward.

I believe if you can pass the baton to team members who utilize critical thinking and strategically leverage your resources, that puts you on the path to having an E.L.F (Easy, Lucrative, and Fun) business.
