I like stress, but I don’t like distress. Distress will tear you down. Stress, like working out, will make you stronger.

I learned early on in my career to do one thing every day that scares you. That means doing something challenging. Through that challenge you become better. There is a saying: “Life is not happening to you, it’s happening for you.” As a matter of fact, one of my best friends, Dr. Sean Stephenson’s last words to me before he died from an accident were:

“This is happening for me, not to me.”

When bad things happen, ask yourself, “Is this happening to me, or for me?”

Listen: Nothing feels good in the middle. You’re in the middle of a bankruptcy? You’re in the middle of a divorce? You’re in the middle of an illness? None of it feels good in the middle. So, in the middle, it requires a lot of courage.

When you get done though, you learn from it. You grow from it. For Sean, it was passing on. While facing death he still centered himself.

If you can develop yourself to see things that happen in your life… even the most painful things… as there to help you, it can transform you.

As my friend Dan Sullivan says:

“All those things that seem to oppose our goals are actually the raw material for achieving them.”
