“Life is the only thing worth living for”. I heard that line in a song. Sometimes life just sucks though. But I’ll tell you…when you can tap into what helped you get through the pain and angst at times in your life, things CAN turn around.
Everyone has been through dark times. And there will be dark times in the future. That’s why it’s so important to have people around you. When I started seeking help in my own recovery, I didn’t recover right away. I kept doing drugs, and I kept doing a lot of stuff… but it got to the point where I would focus on just living one day at a time.
I realized that, like a smoldering flame, while you are sitting or resting on your laurels, your addict is in the front yard doing push-ups. So don’t ever get too cocky. In my own life, I realize that if the stress ever gets too much, I could potentially default back into patterns and behaviors, because it has happened before…BUT…I also don’t let it define who I am as a person.
In fact, now it’s more of a reason why I have to help people. Because it keeps me in check.
When I was in active addiction, my entire life was REACTING to everything. Now I RESPOND to things as much as I can. When I find myself reacting, I think, “Okay, who do I need to talk to? Where’s this resentment coming from? How do I need to get out of it? Who do I need to make amends to?” I keep trying to clean up my side of the street.
In life, having a bit more (or a lot more) empathy and compassion is helpful…but it doesn’t happen if you don’t have empathy and compassion for yourself. You can’t fix the world with broken hands. You got to take care of yourself too.
