When Joe sat down with media expert Paula Rizzo, Paula gave her thoughts on what Entrepreneurs can do to get more media attention. One of the points Paula makes is you need to put yourself in the shoes of your audience. Media is about THEM, not you. THAT is the lens through which to look at getting media. Any idea or story you have needs to be something the audience will care about.
“It’s a public service. This is for them. This is not for me”, says Paula. This is the mindset that produces (and gets you) great media.
What steps can you take to get media viewership and attention? “The biggest part is reading and watching the outlet you want to be in,” Paula says. It sounds obvious, but people don’t do it! So many media pitches are off base and have NOTHING to do with what the media outlet covers. Mass pitching without any tailoring to any audience falls flat. The solution? Identify where you want to be and why you want to be there.
Here’s an example: Paula tells the story of an Entrepreneur who was selling relish. This individual saw one of the media anchors LOVED relish. So, she sent a gift bag of relish to the anchor. The Media Anchor then ended up using the relish in one of their media specials!
If the Entrepreneur had sent relish to a producer cold and who didn’t care about relish, it likely wouldn’t have gotten featured.
The lesson? It’s about UNDERSTANDING YOUR AUDIENCE.
Media can give you A LOT of credibility. It can also open opportunities for you. You can take the media hits you’ve done and go to ALL the other places you want to be in and show them what you’ve done.
The result? Your credibility goes up, your visibility goes through the roof, and Clients see all the media outlets with which you’ve shared your expertise.
Here’s the takeaway: Don’t make your pitch about you, or your business, or your book. The media doesn’t care. They care what you, your business, or book can do for THEIR AUDIENCE. “You should be in the mindset of giving,” says Paula. “What can you give to that audience?”
