One of my criteria for determining who I let into my world is this: How do people who are more powerful treat people that are less powerful? This is a great criteria because it opens you up to see a lot of things AND it’s also a great determinant of who you want as your True Friends and in your inner circle.
The people who become my friends meet this criteria. How do they treat waiters and waitresses? Do they say thank you when someone opens the door for them? You can find these things out by simply observing. On top of all this, you can do a simple background search online. There are little things you can do, that don’t cost a lot of money, that are just smart to do.
In business and life, a lot of times a few basic moves produce all the results. I created a tool called “My Genius Network”, which I write about in my book “What’s In It For Them?”. You draw a circle on a piece of paper (or even on a napkin) with you in the middle of the circle, and then you draw eight lines from that circle listing eight important people in your life.
Once you have the names written down, you then think of what skill or talent THEY have. Then, you think about how YOU can help THEM. If you start to get clear about the people in your life you have a connection with and the areas where you can help each other, you can become more connected.
And, of course, you can also put the names of people you WANT to connect with and think about the skills and capabilities they have that can help you, and how you can help them. I mean, think about it: How do you meet ANYONE? You show up with a GIVE that is equal or greater than the other person’s WANT. This “My Genius Network” process is how you figure out what other people want so you can give it to them. You can even just ask them: “How can I be helpful? What needs solved in your life or business?”
Often, people don’t know what they want or need. So, your job is to be a Pain Detective. You need to figure out where the pain in their life is. Many times, it’s through pain that you can find connection. This doesn’t mean you want to make things painful; It just means you find the pain someone is going through, and people tend to resonate when you try to help alleviate their pain. I guarantee if you utilize “My Genius Network” and start cultivating your Genius Network – where you help others and others help you – it will change your life.
