Goal setting is not just helpful for personal growth. It can also make a real difference in the workplace, especially for small businesses.

A study from Tilburg University found that employees at small cassava processing companies in Ghana became more productive after setting daily goals. Even without financial rewards, workers increased their production by 16%, improved hourly productivity by 8%, and helped firms raise average labor output by 13%.

The process was simple. Workers were trained to track their daily production, and some were asked to set daily goals. These goals were not tied to bonuses or penalties, but they still helped workers stay focused, structure their day, and reduce distractions.

One of the biggest takeaways is that productivity does not always require expensive tools or major investments. In this study, workers used basic paper booklets to record their goals and progress. This made goal setting an affordable and practical strategy for small businesses with limited resources.

The study also found that goal setting was especially effective for piece-rate workers, who directly benefited from producing more. For them, output increased by 32% and productivity rose by 24%.

Overall, goal setting works because it gives people direction. When employees know what they are aiming for each day, they are more likely to stay focused and perform better.
