The lives of Entrepreneurs today are culturally complex. In fact, many Entrepreneurs aren’t happy… There’s a quote from Einstein that sums up how to live a happy and fulfilling life. The quote was written by Einstein on a letterhead in 1922. That letterhead sold at an auction for $1.56 million. On it, Einstein wrote,

“A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.“

Entrepreneurs are often in a constant state of restlessness. We will sometimes trade peace for productivity, and suffer to get things done. One of the biggest causes of the angst is dopamine hits we get from technologies like smartphones.
As Ray Kurzweil has said, these phones are like “brain extenders”. We don’t just use our phones as simple phones. We also use them to find restaurants, to communicate with everyone, take pictures, and more. We feel like we’re missing an appendage if we lose our phone. But, in doing so, we have culturally assigned our lives and peace of mind over to technologies.

More and more, I’m seeing human happiness is about a state of flow… IF you can get there. All of these mechanisms we use are actually taking us out of that state of mind and flow.

Marketing is algorithms right now. What you read and listen to seems to inform you about what is going on in the world, but does it really? The truth is, what is going on in YOUR world is based on what you read, what you listen to, who your friends are, and more. We’re all being personalized into a certain frame of what the world actually is totally based on our habits and behaviors. As a result, we can find ourselves in a constant frenetic state. But, we can also become more aware and conscious of this…

Ask yourself: How much have you outsourced your internal peace of mind to these outside forces? We have to learn to chisel out peace in this culturally complex system.
