Small-business owners face nearly $105 billion of litigation each year. It might be hard to imagine right now, but nobody thinks about a lawsuit happening to them until it’s too late. So, what can you do to prevent yourself from worrying too much? Here are some common mistakes you can learn from.
Breach of Contract Actions
One of the most common types of business lawsuits is breach of contract actions. Whether through written or verbal agreements, business owners make promises and conceptualize the future all the time. Unfortunately, things they say can be skewed in a whole different direction in court. Make sure to consider the language of your company’s business deals carefully, and make sure you can deliver your promises in full. Otherwise, you might have to defend yourself in court.
Fraud or Misrepresentation
If a company is too careless about the product or service they present, then customers can sue that company for being willfully misleading. Those that feel misled, whether they are customers, vendors, partners, or other entities, will often do everything they can to recover from the damages.
Third-Party Injuries
If a client walks on a wet floor at your business and slips, you’ll often be the one paying their medical expenses. You may even need to pay for their physical therapy/rehabilitation costs and lost wages while they are recovering.
