I was being interviewed for a business course and a question I got asked was, “Can anybody learn to network?”
YES, anybody can learn to network – and – anybody can improve their networking. Why? Because networking is about CONNECTION.
In your own life, you’re ALREADY networking and you ALREADY have people you know. That said, you can connect with even more people. So why can it feel difficult?
Nothing feels good in the middle. Think of being in the middle of a hard workout, or learning a difficult skill, or bumbling your way through a new product or service sales presentation…in the beginning, you have to operate with COURAGE. Doing things in flow where you produce results over and over again feels good – and that good feeling is CONFIDENCE. But, in the beginning, if you don’t have confidence, you have to operate with COURAGE.
You wouldn’t be a business owner or entrepreneur if you didn’t have a certain level of courage. The French economist Jean-Baptiste Say first coined the word ‘Entrepreneur’ in 1804 saying, “The entrepreneur shifts economic resources out of an area of lower and into an area of higher productivity and greater yield.” If you apply entrepreneurial thinking and action to any skill set – in this case, to NETWORKING – then, of course, you can take your networking skills from where you are right now to a higher productivity and yield.
How do you do it? Well, you can’t pay someone to do your push-ups for you; You got to go and talk to people. You go to connect with people. And, you got to be okay bumbling your way through it. Anything in life worth doing, in the beginning, is worth doing poorly – and you may do it poorly. But you wouldn’t have made it this far in your life if you didn’t already know how to bumble your way through it. It’s the same with learning to crawl before you walk; Treat networking the same way.
I went from being a super shy, introverted person to building one of the most respected, highest level connection groups in the world. I did it because I was very DISCONNECTED growing up. I had a longing and craving to figure out how to connect with people. As long as the DESIRE is there…and as long as you understand all money earned is a by-product of value creation…then that’s what it takes. And if you feel like you have to pressure somebody to get them to do something, learn not to be tone deaf to what is going on in other people’s lives.
Lead with what you can do for other people. Go into relationships without having any expectations except expecting yourself to be useful, grateful, and helpful. If you can help lead people to a result – especially if you can help them reduce their suffering – it’s karmic the way life gives to the giver and takes from the taker. If you have “taker” energy, you pay the price for that. If you just give, people give back.
There’s no more valuable skill I can think of than connecting and building a network of individuals with genius skills and capabilities. It can get you anything you want, because, as I say, any problem in the world can be solved with the right Genius Network. There are people out there who can help you solve any problem you want, from parenting, to health, to spirituality, to business, and more. It all comes from other people’s skills and capabilities combined with your vision. That’s how the world goes around.
