I talk about how you can have an E.L.F.® (Easy, Lucrative, and Fun!) Business or a H.A.L.F.™ Business (Hard, Annoying, Lame, and Frustrating). The question is: Can ANY business be made E.L.F.?
I’ve had a conversation with my Friend Dan Sullivan, the Founder of Strategic Coach, about how there’s no such thing as Good or Bad Work in the world; There’s just Good and Bad work for YOU.
For example, “Bad” work for me might be accounting, but my CFO loves accounting. My CFO might hate doing Marketing, but I LOVE Marketing.
E.L.F. is a Mindset and a Methodology. It’s also a Filtering Mechanism. You can ask yourself whether people and projects are E.L.F. or not – and bring them in or filter them out.
There’s no Perfect Business. Running a Business is solving Problems for a profit. Everyday Entrepreneurs ‘make it up’, and we ‘make it real’, which is also a concept from Dan Sullivan.
No matter how structured we get, there will be good and bad decisions, but, over time, you become more capable and able to navigate the craziness of running a Business. When people ask me what “Success” is, I explain how it doesn’t matter what MY definition of Success is. Why? Because human happiness doesn’t come from consuming other people’s values and trying to adopt them as your own; It comes from taking whatever arises, filtering it through your own life, and producing values that matter to you.
The same goes for an E.L.F. Business. Only YOU can say what is E.L.F. for you…
Here’s how you can USE THIS: Take a piece of paper and put “E.L.F” on one side, and “H.A.L.F.” on the other. List everything you do in your Business, every activity that happens, and every person in your Business. Put them all in the “E.L.F” or “H.A.L.F.” categories. Then, start taking actions to make your Business less “H.A.L.F.” and more “E.L.F”!
