According to the BBC, employees who use all of their leave are 6.5% more likely to get promoted or get a raise than employees who retain eleven or more annual leave days. Having a well-staffed company that can cope with a brief absence is one of the key ways employers can ensure employees are as happy and productive as possible. Unlike free massages once a week, leave is a benefit your employees actually value.

In a study done by the employee benefit company Perkbox, researchers found that while employees said they didn’t care about perks like Friday night beers and weekly massages, they were frustrated when those benefits went away. However, one thing that Perkbox found employees do value is flexible, generous leave.

Another thing employee said they cared about was the ability to work a flexible schedule. Rather than organizing company-wide fitness competitions and programs, consider offering your employees a flex schedule and subsidizing fitness classes away from the office. After all, an overworked staff is an underperforming staff, and one of the key ways you can boost employee health is by setting clear limits on how much of their lives work cuts into. A final way you can help your staff live their healthiest life is by limiting access to emails over the weekends.

It may seem counterintuitive, but keeping your staff out of the office — and in the office on their own schedule — are two of the best ways you can maintain a happy, healthy workforce.
