Working from home isn’t easy, but looking at a computer screen all day has never been easy no matter where you are. In 2020, computer use just might be the most common cause of eyestrain. Here are a few self-care tips to help give your eyes a break.
First, blink often. Unless you’re trying to do the “no blinking” game with your computer screen, you should blink about 10–12 times per minute while working at your desk. Most people don’t blink as often while at the computer because they are focusing so intently, but it contributes to dry eyes. Blinking will help produce moisture and refresh your vision.
Second, take eye breaks. Do the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look somewhere 20 feet away for 20 seconds. You’ll actually feel your vision relax by doing this.
Third, adjust your lighting and reduce glare. Is your screen in front of a window? You might be annoyed with the morning glare, but think, “Hey, it’s only for a few hours in the morning, I can deal with it.” However, those hours add up, and glare, whether from sunlight or fluorescent lights, makes your eyestrain worse. Consider turning some lights off while at the desk.
