Sometimes people become intellectually lazy when they don’t “have to” do something. When they are forced to do something, they find a way. As I say, in order to have a breakthrough, you’ve got to break something. Sometimes that means breaking your comfort zone.
A lot of success is showing up, and most people don’t have the stamina in order to sustain learning and the application of that learning. For example, the real leverage in Business is when you can spend more money, more sustainably, than your competitors.
If anything, it’s about ‘Staying Power’. I’ve seen people who do giant launches, make millions, take pictures in front of their Lamborghinis – and two years later they are broke or under investigation or something. That doesn’t have to be you. If you consistently stay at something, nurture relationships, and follow the advice I heard in my 20’s (a quote by Wilson Mizner), “Be nice to people on your way up because you’ll meet them on your way down,” – that is a smart way to approach things.
I like stress, but I don’t like distress. Distress will tear you down. Stress, like working out, will make you stronger. I learned early on in my career to do one thing every day that scares you. That means doing something challenging. Through that challenge you become better.
There is a saying: “Life is not happening to you, it’s happening for you.” As a matter of fact, one of my best friends, Dr. Sean Stephenson’s last words to me before he died from an accident were:
“This is happening for me, not to me.”
When bad things happen, ask yourself, “Is this happening to me, or for me?”
Listen: Nothing feels good in the middle. You’re in the middle of a bankruptcy? You’re in the middle of a divorce? You’re in the middle of an illness? None of it feels good in the middle. So, in the middle, it requires a lot of courage.
When you get done though, you learn from it. You grow from it. For Sean, it was passing on. While facing death he still centered himself.
