When hiring student employees, you need to consider several factors. While doing so can be beneficial for you and the students you hire, there can be some downsides you need to prepare for. Here are just a few of the pros and cons associated with hiring students for your seasonal work.

Pros

Lower payroll costs

Hiring students with little work experience means spending less on employee wages. Although you still need to pay them fairly and be aware of the costs associated with hiring temporary employees.

Willingness to learn

Students employees primarily use work to build up their resume and skill set. They will be much more apt to receiving feedback and asking questions which makes for great employees.

Cons

Less work experience

If the position you’re looking to fill requires a unique skill set, you may have a better experience hiring someone that already has those skills instead of one you have to train from the start.

Schoolwork will be a priority

When hiring a regular employee, you expect them to make work their top priority. With student workers, you have to accept that their school work will be their primary focus. So depending on your business, it may be difficult to schedule them for certain hours of the day.

These are just some of the benefits and downsides to consider when hiring student employees. I encourage you to continue exploring your options as you delve deeper into your hiring strategy.
